A vulnerability in the web UI of Cisco IND could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with administrative privileges on the underlying operating system of an affected device. This vulnerability is due to improper input validation when uploading a Device Pack. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by altering the request that is sent when uploading a Device Pack. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM on the underlying operating system of an affected device. Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
The vulnerability results from improper input validation during the transmission of the so-called Device Pack through the web interface. An attacker can modify the HTTP request sent during the Device Pack upload process by injecting malicious system commands. If successful, the exploit enables the execution of arbitrary commands in the context of the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM account on the host operating system. Performing the attack requires active authentication in the application.
The attacker gains full administrative privileges (NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM) on the operating system, enabling device takeover, data theft, malicious software installation, and further lateral movement in the network.
Software updates provided by Cisco should be applied in accordance with the references in the official advisory (cisco-sa-ind-CAeLFk6V). The vendor states that no workarounds exist to eliminate this vulnerability.
