LG Simple Editor cp Command Directory Traversal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of LG Simple Editor. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the cp command implemented in the makeDetailContent method. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied path prior to using it in file operations. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of SYSTEM. . Was ZDI-CAN-19925.
The vulnerability lies in the handling of the cp command in the makeDetailContent method. The application does not properly validate the path supplied by the user before using it in file operations (path traversal, CWE-22). An attacker can craft a request containing a malicious path, which leads to writing a file to an arbitrary location in the system and consequently to code execution.
An attacker can execute arbitrary code in the context of the SYSTEM account, gaining full control over the attacked machine, including access to data, ability to install malicious software, and further lateral movement in the network.
Apply patches available from the vendor according to references (https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-23-1204/). Until the update is applied, it is recommended to restrict network access to the LG Simple Editor service using a firewall and monitor traffic for unauthorized requests.
