Pixelfed is an open source photo sharing platform. When processing requests authorization was improperly and insufficiently checked, allowing attackers to access far more functionality than users intended, including to the administrative and moderator functionality of the Pixelfed server. This vulnerability affects every version of Pixelfed between v0.10.4 and v0.11.9, inclusive. A proof of concept of this vulnerability exists. This vulnerability affects every local user of a Pixelfed server, and can potentially affect the servers' ability to federate. Some user interaction is required to setup the conditions to be able to exercise the vulnerability, but the attacker could conduct this attack time-delayed manner, where user interaction is not actively required. This vulnerability has been addressed in version 0.11.11. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
During HTTP request processing, the Pixelfed server did not properly verify user permissions, allowing access to a much broader range of functions than intended. An attacker could thereby gain access to administrative panels and moderator tools. The attack requires minimal user interaction to establish conditions, but can be performed with a delay — without active victim participation at the time of the actual attack. A publicly known proof of concept for this vulnerability exists.
An attacker can gain unauthorized access to administrative and moderator functions of a Pixelfed server, threatening the confidentiality of all local users' data and potentially disrupting the server's ability to federate with other instances.
Pixelfed must be updated immediately to version 0.11.11 or later. The producer indicates no known workarounds — updating is the only remedial measure.
All Pixelfed versions from v0.10.4 to v0.11.9 inclusive; affects every local user of a Pixelfed server running on a vulnerable version.
