Windows TCP/IP Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
The flaw affects the Windows TCP/IP stack and is classified as an integer underflow (CWE-191), which means that incorrect arithmetic operations on integers can lead to memory corruption. An attacker can send specially crafted network packets to the vulnerable system without any authentication or user action, allowing the vulnerability to be triggered over the network (vector AV:N, AC:L, PR:N, UI:N).
Successful exploitation of the vulnerability gives the attacker the ability to remotely execute arbitrary code at the operating system level, which as a result may mean complete takeover of the attacked machine, violation of data confidentiality and integrity, and system unavailability.
Microsoft patches released as part of the August 2024 update (Patch Tuesday, 2024-08-13) should be applied immediately, available through Windows Update and Microsoft Update Catalog.
