The affected system allows remote users to send maliciously crafted objects. Due to insecure deserialization of user-supplied content by the affected software, an unauthenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a maliciously crafted serialized object. This could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the device with SYSTEM privileges.
The attacker sends a specially crafted malicious serialized object over the network to the vulnerable system without the need for authentication. The software deserializes the received data without proper validation (CWE-502 — insecure deserialization), allowing injection and execution of arbitrary code. Execution occurs in the context of the SYSTEM account, granting the attacker full administrative privileges on the host.
An unauthenticated attacker can take full control of the server by executing arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges — which in an industrial environment can lead to disruption or takeover of telemetry and control processes.
Software must be updated to version V3.1.2.1 or later. Detailed update instructions are available in the Siemens security bulletin SSA-454789 at: https://cert-portal.siemens.com/productcert/html/ssa-454789.html. Until the patch is deployed, it is recommended to restrict network access to the server via firewall and implement OT network segmentation.
